Punjab’s Irrigation Department has developed a mobile app, Neeru, to track real-time water flow in canal distributaries. Farmers receive alerts on flow schedules, discharge volume, and tail-end availability. The app uses IoT flow meters installed at key points along canals in Ferozepur and Patiala. So far, over 20,000 farmers have downloaded the app. Water theft and over-irrigation have dropped, and cooperative societies use app data to equitably schedule irrigation turns. The app supports Punjabi and Hindi languages and also includes grievance registration features. Plans are underway to integrate weather forecasts and crop-specific irrigation tips.
