The West Bengal Ecotourism Board has launched a pilot project that enables local fisherwomen in the Sunderbans to run eco-resorts. These homestay-style lodges are solar-powered, made from local bamboo and mud, and offer guided tours in creeks and mangroves. Women are trained in hospitality, wildlife conservation, and disaster preparedness. Tourists can also engage in crab fishing, honey collection demos, and handicraft workshops. The initiative not only boosts family incomes but also reduces pressure on fishing and forest resources. Within three months, over 500 tourists booked stays, and the model is seen as a scalable blend of conservation and livelihood.
