Andhra Pradesh Launches Seaweed Farming Clusters to Support Coastal Women

To promote blue economy livelihoods, Andhra Pradesh’s Fisheries Department has initiated seaweed farming clusters in Visakhapatnam and Srikakulam. Women self-help groups are being trained in growing Kappaphycus and Gracilaria seaweed on floating bamboo rafts. Seaweed is harvested every 45 days and sold to cosmetic and fertilizer industries. So far, over 350 women have joined the program, reporting steady income and low investment costs. The state provides seed stock, gear, and market linkage support. Marine biologists monitor the ecological impact, and early findings suggest positive effects on coastal biodiversity. Seaweed farming is being seen as a sustainable, climate-resilient livelihood option for coastal communities.
